Un’ermeneutica dell’ερμηνεύς

Abstract

What was an ερμηνεύς for the Greeks? This word is normally understood as «interpret» or «translator», such as the verb ερμηνεύειν is understood as «to interpret» «to translate». On the contrary this essay argues that the proper meaning of these words points toward the semantic sphere of communicating, re-articulating a message by means of a different semiotic code. In the shadow of the ερμηνεύς we can still perceive the presence of Hermes, the god of word, λόγος and communication.
